For about thirty years the Bible Students generally understood Russell himself to be the “faithful and wise servant” of Matthew 24:45. The organisation records that the idea was publicly expressed by Russell’s wife and that “Brother Russell did not reject their view”, although he avoided applying the text to himself.

The organisation’s position or later explanation: Proclaimers presents the collective understanding of 1881, reaffirmed in 1927, as the correct one, and quotes Russell's 1906 disclaimer: “I claim nothing of superiority, nor supernatural power, dignity or authority.”

“Over a decade later, however, Brother Russell's wife publicly expressed the idea that Russell himself was the faithful and wise servant. The view that she voiced concerning the identity of the ‘faithful servant’ came to be generally held by the Bible Students for some 30 years. Brother Russell did not reject their view, but he personally avoided making such an application of the text.”

The chapter contrasts the 1881 Watch Tower statement that the ‘faithful and wise servant’ was the whole body of Christ with the later identification of Russell himself, and notes that the collective understanding was reaffirmed in 1927. It also quotes Russell in 1906: “The truths I present, as God's mouthpiece, were not revealed in visions or dreams …”

Confidence note. Opened on the Watchtower Online Library (jv chap. 10 p. 120 – p. 148); page marker 143 sits immediately before the passage. A full-text search of the library returns exactly one occurrence of the phrase “Russell’s wife” in the whole of Proclaimers — this one. The book does not name her.
