“Keep Yourselves in God’s Love”, “Chapter 13: Celebrations That Displease God”

2008 · p.153 · par. 15 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“Thus, when children today, dressed as ghosts or witches, go from house to house threatening a mischievous trick unless they receive a treat, they unwittingly perpetuate the rituals of Samhain.”

The 2008 study book traces Halloween to the Celtic festival of Samhain and places it among celebrations that displease God.

How to Remain in God’s Love, “Chapter 13: Do All Celebrations Please God?”

2017 · pp.179-180 · par. 15 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“When children today dress in costumes and go from house to house saying “Trick or treat,” they do not realize that they are imitating this ancient demonic custom.”

The revised edition of the same chapter keeps the Halloween section essentially unchanged, while the toasting section in the same chapter has been softened.

Provenance and verification note for How to Remain in God’s Love, Chapter 13: Do All Celebrations Please God?

Confidence note. Chapter opened on the Watchtower Online Library and re-opened for audit on 19 September 2026; paragraph 15 straddles the page 180 marker, so it begins on page 179 and the quoted sentence is on page 180. The book is of 2017, not 2024: see the dating evidence recorded on src-chg-p-lvs-2024-ch13-toasting. The id of this record still carries the slug “2024” from the batch in which it was first written.

Corroborated by. src-chg-p-lv-2008-ch13-halloween

Notes. Evidence that a custom with the same kind of argued pagan origin was not reconsidered when toasting was. The two chapters are eight years apart, not sixteen: 2008 and 2017.
