In 1974 The Watchtower ruled that oral and anal intercourse within marriage fell within the Greek term rendered ‘fornication’, allowed a wife subjected to such acts against her will to seek a Scriptural divorce, and directed that a couple who engaged in them by consent be dealt with by the elders as serious wrongdoers.

The Watchtower, “Questions From Readers”

15 November 1974 · pp.703-704 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“That por·neiʹa can rightly be considered as including perversions within the marriage arrangement is seen in that the man who forces his wife to have unnatural sex relations with him in effect “prostitutes” or “debauches” her. … If, on the other hand, the lewd practices were engaged in by mutual consent, neither mate would have a basis for claiming por·neiʹa as a Scriptural ground for divorce. … Such a case, if brought to the attention of elders in the congregation, would be handled like any other serious wrongdoing.”

Answering whether lewd practices by one marriage partner towards the other are a Scriptural basis for divorce, the magazine extends the 1972 definition of the Greek term inside the marriage, names oral and anal intercourse among the acts covered, allows a wife subjected to them against her will to seek a divorce, and directs that a couple who engage in them by consent be dealt with as serious wrongdoers.

The Watchtower, “Questions From Readers”

15 December 1972 · p.768 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“any married person who goes outside the marriage bond and engages in immoral sexual relations, whether with someone of the opposite sex or someone of the same sex, whether natural or unnatural and perverted, is guilty of committing por·neiʹa or “fornication” in the Bible sense.”

The answer broadens the meaning of the Greek word rendered ‘fornication’ at Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 beyond ordinary heterosexual intercourse. At this stage the broadened definition is still confined to acts outside the marriage.
